Alright, let’s take a break from reviewing food. Let’s move on to beer: Hawaiian beer. This past summer I had a chance to chill at the Kona Brewing Company (Twitter handle: @konabrewingco) on the Kona side of the Big Island. Having visited 2 islands prior to hitting the Big Island, and guzzling lots of their Wailua Wheat seasonal beer, I figured I’d pay a visit to brewery and see what else they had brewing.

New to the brand, I grabbed a table and ordered a sampler: 4 5-oz glasses of any of the available 10 beers, and took a few sips from my friends’ glasses. There was a live band playing island jams that evening. Check their website for their entertainment lineup.
My beer recommendations:
- Wailua Wheat
- Big Wave Golden Ale
- Longboard Island Lager
- Hula Hefeweizen
- Castaway IPA
You know what, I might as well list everything. I’m not a fan of dark beer, but their Black Sand Porter is not bad.
Although I didn’t try any of their food, their menu items look tasty; and the neighboring diners looked like they were enjoying their meals. That evening pizza was a favorite. Too bad I ate before stopping by.
Kona Brewing Company also offers complimentary tours at 10.30am and 3pm daily.
Lastly, they are a certified green restaurant.
