Uncle Sam’s has traveled from Beijing to NYC, and will open its first U.S. location just down the street from the Empire State Building at 307 Fifth Avenue in New York City on May 18th.
Teamed with the expertise of Bellyfull Consulting Chef Bradford Thompson (Bellyfull Consulting’s founder, James Beard Award winner), Uncle Sam’s will offer guests an Asian-inspired menu of American comfort food with an option for every palate.
On the menu is a selection of burgers, SAMwiches, salads and sides. Dee had a chance to preview the menu. Her thoughts:
Uncle Sam’s Signature Burger – Sautéed Mushrooms, Oyster Sauce, Swiss Cheese – The burger was cooked medium well and had good flavor. The addition of oyster sauce was interesting and added saltiness to the burger. Not my favorite, but worth a try.
Char Siu Bacon Burger – BBQ bacon, cheddar, pickles – (shown above) A little on the heavy side, but delicious. Might be better without the cheese.
Dim Sum Burger – Pork-shrimp patty, shiitake mushrooms, soy ginger sauce – My favorite burger on the menu. It reminded me more of shui mai or a lumpia (Filipino eggroll) nestled between a Martin’s potato bun. If you like dumplings and dim sum, try it.
Chicken SAMWiches – I prefer these over the burgers. Panko-crusted chicken breast are fried to perfection – crispy outside and juicy inside.
Beijing Crispy Chicken Samwich – Sliced Cucumber, Hoisin Glaze, Scallions – concept was inspired from Peking Duck. Salty, savory. It’s like eating a chicken bao bun.
So-Cal – Crushed avocado, sprouts, pickled jalapeno – Clean tasting, not salty. My favorite of the chicken sandwiches.
Overall, I thought the concept was good. It’s not a place I would visit often for a burger, but if I was craving a non-American burger, I’d come here.
Classic burgers start at $4.95, Chicken SAMwiches are $8.95 – $9.95, and specialty burgers range from $8.95 to $13.95.
