Steamed mussels is an easy dish to make. It only requires a few simple ingredients. I normally use Prince Edward Island (PEI) mussels since they’re almost always available at the market, but you can also use blue mussels. A good bottle of white wine is key as well. After all, you don’t want to cook with a wine you wouldn’t drink.
Ingredients
- 3 tbsp unsalted butter
- 1 shallot, sliced
- 5 garlic cloves, crushed
- 5 sprigs of fresh thyme
- 1 cup dry white wine
- 3 lbs Prince Edward Island mussels, scrubbed and debearded. Be sure to discard the mussels that do not close.
- salt and freshly ground pepper, to taste
Directions
- Melt the butter in a large pot over medium heat
- Sauté the shallots in butter stirring occasionally until tender, 4-5 minutes.
- Add garlic and thyme sprigs and saute for 1-2 minutes.
- Add the mussels and pour the wine over the mussels. Season with salt and pepper
- Turn up the heat to high, and bring to a boil.
- Cover, and steam over medium heat just until mussels open, about 10 minutes.
