If you’re at the Mad. Sq. Eats island (or I guess a block full of food kiosks) in the Flatiron District, I recommend checking out Hong Kong Street Cart located on the west side of the block close to 25th Street. They have a small menu of buns, soups, and salads.
My favorites are the Beijing Ya Bun and the Ginger Chicken Soup. The Beijing Ya Bun, $4, a steamed bun that sandwiches a piece of hoisin duck and thinly sliced scallions. The best part of it might be the skin – the crunch of the skin that is just so darn tasty. The Ginger Chicken Soup comes in a decent portion – about a medium size cup – for $6. The aroma of ginger instantly clears your sinuses once you remove the lid. Dip your spook in, and you’ll see it chock full of strips of chicken and ginger. The broth is very flavorful – reminds me of the soup my mother would cook for me when I was sick. Definitely comfort food for me, and great on a rainy day (that’s when I had it).
