Thanks to Midtown Lunch, the eatery I often walked by and ignored, is now a new spot for me to get my West Indian food fix. That’s Terry’s Gourmet on the corner of 16th and 6th Ave.
Chicken curry over rice |
Their menu has no mention of the steam table which has the usual looking suspects (baked chicken, vegetables, mashed potatoes, etc) plus West Indian curry dishes made with chicken, goat, or potatoes and chick peas. They also serve roti – think of it as a West Indian burrito with the special of the day.
I came with a craving for a roti, but when I saw the chicken curry, I instantly thought of the good ol’ days when I used to eat this type of food several times a week (at restaurants or from sharing home-cooked meals with my friends). The meal, pictured right, is Chicken curry over rice which cost $6.75 (that’s a pretty good deal for NYC prices). The chicken is tender and flavorful, and the sauce is delicious. Warning: You might find bits of bones in the sauce.
Yeah, they’ve got deli stuff too – sandwiches and salads – but why bother when you can have awesome West Indian food instead.
