Bongo Brothers (@bongobros) is the latest food truck to serve up good eats in the Flatiron District of NYC. Parked on 20th and 5th Ave, you can’t miss the yellow truck or the aroma of Cuban food.
On the menu are sandwiches for $7, including the classic Cubano, made with smoked ham, mojo marinated roasted pork, swiss cheese, mustard, and homemade pickles. Another popular sandwich is the Ropa Vieja – braised flank steak, sautéed onion and green and red peppers, and garlic tomato creole sauce.
If you are just stopping by for a snack, like what I did, I recommend getting an Empanada de picadillo, a ground beef empanada seasoned with sofrito and fried to perfection costing $3. When I stopped by 2 customers ahead of me ordered a total of 6, leaving me patiently waiting for the next batch to be cooked. While waiting for my freshly fried empanada and tostones, I sipped on a can of Materva Yerba Mate soda, a Cuban favorite. It was the first time I ever had this soda, and it was pretty good; the taste is similar to D & G Genuine Jamaican Kola Champagne.
The empanada was delicious – a crispy golden outer shell with perfectly seasoned beef. You can get a decent empanada at the Cuban restaurant, Sophie’s, which is a few blocks away, but I say skip Sophie’s and head to Bongo Brothers.
I’ll be back for sure, to try the croquettes and their sandwiches.
