We stumbled upon De Kaaskamer while looking for a boutique on Runstraat. I never found the boutique, but I’m glad we found this neighborhood gem.
As soon as you enter, you see cheese wheels and cheese portions galore. There is a variety of cooked and cured meats, including prosciutto and pâté, oils and vinegars, and accompaniments for your cheese. While I was in awe of the selection, and trying to figure out what the English translation of each cheese was, I saw a bunch of locals queueing up to get freshly made sandwiches, particularly the baguette of the week – a freshly made baguette with the special cheese of the week.
That day I had a great sandwich: fougerus and rucola pesto (Fougerus and Arugula Pesto) on a multi-grain baguette for 5€. Fougerus is an artisanal cheese belonging to the Brie group. The luscious slices of brie were amazing – buttery, soft, and creamy. The pesto was a perfect touch to the sandwich – light olive oil, chunks of tomato, and arugula. It was hard to give it up and share it with my husband. I also picked up small containers of cubed goat cheese and charcuterie (salami) to bring along with me to Vondelpark.
The staff are friendly, and they do speak some English. So if you can’t decide on what cheese to get, just ask.
