Note: my blog post has been in draft mode since August. Oops!Eataly, the new culinary temple of Mario Batali, is opened it’s doors on August 31st at 4pm. I had the opportunity to step into the food hall opening night without having to wait on the line that wrapped around the street corner. You’ll see what I mean – just try passing by on the weekend.
Of course, with any grand opening, it was jam-packed and chaotic. I had to squeeze my way past crowds of people – people stopping to take photos (I’ll admit, I was doing it too.) and people just standing in awe in the middle of the aisles. I eventually landed in the pasta aisle, where I stumbled upon Mario Batali wearing his orange Crocs. Yup, I had to take a photo with him.
Alright, back to food…
It was overwhelming – sections for a bakery, butcher, seafood, fresh and dried pasta, fresh produce, restaurants (from pizza to vegetarian fare to steak), gelato, and coffee.
Focused on my mission – to purchase some Italian food, I made my way through the 50,000-square-foot Italian food emporium. I picked up freshly baked bread, prosciutto, ham, Parmesan, hazelnut chocolate, and a bottle of wine (from the wine shoppe next door). The damage: $50. The splurge was worth it, despite how few items I purchased.
