Turon was usually served at parties when I was growing up. I’ve always had them deep fried. My metabolism isn’t as fast as it used to be. With fresh jackfruit available at the market I grew tired of eating it raw so I decided to try this, cooked a different way – using an air fryer.
In the past I’ve cooked lumpia in my air fryer, and it wasn’t quite the same. The color of the wrapper was pale, not that golden brown it typically is when deep fried. So I thought my biggest challenge would be achieving that pretty brown wrapper and caramelized filling.
I decided to try putting a light coating of oil onto the wrappers before placing them into my air fryer basket. Just as a test, I tried cooking a small batch. If that failed, I would resort to Plan B – Frying the Turon in oil. Fortunately it was a success in my first attempt and I wound up cooking the whole batch in the air fryer.
The result, delicious, crispy Turon. Less calories because I skipped on frying them in oil and also skipped coating the wrappers with sugar before frying.
At least I have a new way to enjoy this tasty treat without the guilt. Oh, and there’s less mess and less grease splatter. Win win.

Recipe: Turon
Ingredients
- 2 ripe plantains
- 1 cup fresh langka (jackfruit), cut into strips
- 1/4 cup brown sugar. I used Sugar in the Raw brown granulated sugar.
- 1 package spring roll wrappers
- Vegetable oil to coat the Turon
Directions
- Peel and slice the ripe plantains into 1/3 pieces, then divide again into 3-4 strips.
- Pit and slice langka (jackfruit) into thin strips.
- Coat a banana strip with sugar and place onto the spring roll wrapper
- Top with 3-4 strips of jackfruit.
- Top again with another sugar-coated banana slice.
- Roll the wrapper, like you would with an egg roll or burrito.
- Repeat until done.
- Warm your air fryer to 390 degrees.
- Brush vegetable oil on both sides of the Turon.
- Place into basket, do not overcrowd.
- Cook for 10 minutes then flip.
- Cook for another 4 minutes.
- Serve and enjoy.
