On July 31st, we attended a craft beer dinner with Harpoon Brewery at Anthony’s Coal Fired Pizza in White Plains, NY. We enjoyed four courses of food paired with some great craft beers.
The dinner kicked off with an introduction by Harpoon Brewery’s Peter Brod who talked about the food and beer pairings for the evening. He also chatted with each folks at each table to describe the beer characteristics.
The first course was Fresh Mozzarella and Tomato Salad and Anthony’s Classic Italian Salad paired with Harpoon Seasonal Summer Beer. Harpoon Summer Beer is a Kolsch style ale with mild flavors. It was the perfect beer to start off dinner – light and refreshing.
Rich & Dan’s Rye IPA (6.9% ABV) was the second beer of the evening. Introduced in 2011, this IPA has a pronounced hop flavor, and is easy to drink. The IPA was paired with Pork Ribs with Vinegar Peppers and Meatballs with Ricotta Cheese. The pork ribs were delicious. The meat was tender, and you could can easily eat it with a knife and fork – the meal falls off the bone. Add in the vinegar peppers, and the flavors just sing in your mouth.
The meatballs were also delicious. This was the first time we tried it, and we’ll admit, this is probably our favorite dish at Anthony’s – flavorful, juicy, and savory – and perfect with the creamy ricotta cheese it’s paired with. We highly recommend this dish.

On to the third course…
Leviathan Great Scott Wee Heavy (10.20% ABV), an excellent full-bodied amber colored beer, was paired with Coal Oven Roasted Chicken Wings. We’ve dined at Anthony’s before, and were always big fans of their wings. We’ll describe them as guilt-free wings as they’re coal-oven roasted (not fried) with rosemary and onions. There’s a lot of flavor in these wings…you can’t just have one.
And finally, the fourth course: Harpoon’s flagship IPA paired with 3 pizzas: Fresh Mozzarella, Sliced Tomato and Basil, a Traditional pie, and their new specialty pie: Roasted Cauliflower. The IPA, as they describe it is floral, medium body with an aggressive, clean hop finish. It doesn’t fill you up, especially when you have three pies to go through.

Roasted Cauliflower Pizza |
Notable of the three pies we were served was the Roasted Cauliflower Pizza. We normally cook roasted, or grilled cauliflower, but never had it on a pizza. Florets of cauliflower with a slight char rested on top of the pizza. A slice of this got some weight to it, but each bite is light – after all, you are eating veggies. A nice addition to Anthony’s menu. If you haven’t tried it, we recommend giving it a shot.
We’re ready for the next craft beer dinner at Anthony’s. The next event will be in Pennsylvania on Thursday, 9/20 at 7pm, and maybe there might be an event in Connecticut. Be sure to follow Anthony’s on Twitter @AnthonysCFPizza or on Facebook to see when the next event will take place.
