A couple weeks ago, while shopping for cheese at Darien Cheese and Fine Foods, owner and Cheesemonger Ken highly recommended we check out Double L in Westport. He told us it was a great place to shop for local organic produce, fresh seafood and meats. After brunch, we headed to the market for a round of food shopping. The vibrant colors of bright red strawberries welcomed me as I stepped inside. There were plenty of bright green vegetables, including asparagus, kale, and broccoli, stocked in the veggies section.
What caught my eye amongst the great produce were the large English peas in pint size cartons. I immediately thought of cooking them with pasta and pecorino cheese. I picked up a carton, smelled and inspected them. Yup, they were freshly picked. Then I chatted with Lloyd Allen, the owner, who convinced me and Jay to eat them fresh out of the pod. Crunchy and sweet, and not starchy at all. We wound up snacking on a few pods as Lloyd talked about a customer purchasing 20 pounds of these peas earlier in the day. We exchanged a couple recipes and of course, I picked up a pint which I later cooked for dinner.
He then showed me the gorgeous basket they prepared for the GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms) discussion that took place this past Sunday. Here’s a photo of the beautiful basket and the veggies I was tempted to nibble on.
