When you hear bagels, you think of two kinds – the ones from New York and the ones from Montréal. When I was in Alaska, I was surprised to hear of good bagels; and one of the places to go for a good bagel was Alaska Bagel Restaurant on Northern Lights Blvd. Alaska Bagel Restaurant is open for breakfast and lunch until 3pm. They serve bagels, breakfast plates and sandwiches.
Their bagels aren’t plump and doughy, like the New York-style bagel, but they’re on the thin side like the Montréal-style bagel. Some of the bagel choices include apple cinnamon, bacon cheese, and spinach cheese. I tried the Bagel Scramble, a breakfast bagel sandwich with scrambled eggs and meat. My choice was the jalapeno cheese bagel with Canadian Bacon for $7.50. The sandwich was delicious and filling. The eggs were cooked perfectly Not a bad meal to start your day.

And when you’re in Alaska, you’ve gotta have Alaska Lox right? Our waitress recommended the lox open-faced sandwich with onions and capers. I’ll admit I’m not a fan of lox, but the Alaskan style is different – a drier texture, smoother consistency and the fish was very flavorful. Topped with the onions and capers, you’ve got a hit!
I recommend trying this restaurant, and the lox sandwich – you can also opt for a half portion. A plain bagel toasted with a shmear of cream cheese is also pretty good.
