Georges Duboeuf‘s Export Director Yann Bourigault and Chef Bob Waggoner, host of PBS’s Ucook! with Chef Bob, conducted a live Beaujolais and Burger Tasting on Tuesday, July 26 from 8:30pm to 9:30pm on Twitter and a live video stream.
Thanks to WineTwits, I was invited to participate in the event and watch Chef Bob demonstrate three mouthwatering burger creations, and Yann pair each burger with a fantastic Beaujolais from the cellar of Georges Duboeuf.
On the menu for the tasting were three delicious burgers:
- Angus Burger stuffed with bacon
- Grilled Portabella
- Turkey Burger Sliders with Sundried Tomato and Basil
and three Georges Duboeuf bottles of wine:
- Beaujolais Villages 2009, $9.99
- Julienas Chateau des Capitans 2009, $17.99
- Brouilly 2009, $13.99
I normally pair my burgers with a Cabernet Sauvignon or Pinot Noir, and was surprised to see how well Beaujolais paired with each burger – it does not overpower the burger but complements it. In the past, I’ve paired Georges Duboeuf Beaujolais with traditional French fare, but this event has opened up my eyes and shall I say, palette. Any of Beaujolias would be a perfect summer wine.
My favorite burger was the Angus Burger – it was juicy and flavorful – thanks to the bacon, shallots and rosemary stuffing. I’ll definitely make this burger again.
Here are some interesting tidbits I learned during the event:
- Beaujolais produces more grapes than Chablis, the Côte d’Or, the Côte Chalonnaise and Mâconnais combined
- Georges Dubœuf says 2009 is its the best in 50 years.
- Wine doesn’t “breathe” when you pull the cork, but it does when you decant it!
- You do not need to decant the wine if you use an wine aerator to pour.
