People’s Choice Restaurant is a small Jamaican restaurant on Wall Street in Norwalk. They were reviewed by the New York Times in 2010. There is limited seating – 3 tables grouped together with 5 chairs – and a candy machine took the space for the 6th chair. Most people come and get their orders for take-out, which I was tempted to until some seats freed up.
People’s Choice serves breakfast and lunch/dinner. You can order entrees in sizes Small ($8), Medium ($10), and Large ($12). Be warned – the portions are big, and they do give a lot of rice. You’ll see what I mean.
We ordered the Jerk Pork large plate, $12, as per the recommendation of my Jamaican friend who eats here often. The plate, which came with a generous portion of Jamaican rice and peas (kidney beans) with a side of shredded cabbage and carrots, was enough for two people. The pork was tender, lean and spicy – not like the fiery hot spice I normally get at the Jamaican spots in Queens, NY, but decent. The rice and peas: overcooked and bland. Unfortunately, I did not get a chance to order a side of plantains ($2.50) because they were (surprisingly) sold out. Overall, the meal was alright, nothing fabulous that it would make me want to try it again.
People’s Choice also sells Royal Caribbean Bakery* patties – beef, chicken and vegetable. The beef patty is delicious – like any other beef patty you’d get at a Golden Crust or Caribbean restaurant. The meat is mildly spicy (I have quite a tolerance so it may be very spicy for others). My husband usually makes a sandwich out of the patty – layering it between sliced coco bread. Coco bread is bread made with coconut milk. That alone is a meal.
The vegetable patty filling is mild and I believe is made out of callaloo, a vegetable similar to spinach. I have not tried the chicken patty, but that’s for the next go around.

* Royal Caribbean Bakery is one of the big makers of patties in the NY area. They have locations in the Bronx and Mount Vernon. Their main competitor is Golden Krust, which has an “oilier” patty.
