If you’re in the Sablon area of Brussels, be sure to visit La Maison Wittamer – Pâtisserie & Chocolaterie, easily spottable by its pink awning, and sometimes a long queue out the door. Wittamer is the official supplier of chocolate to the Belgian Royal Court and has been making its finest chocolates for over 100 years.
I stopped by early for breakfast. There were no lines, and all the freshly baked pastries and quiches were just being put on display. Breaking away from the typical breakfast of bread and coffee, I bought a sandwich, a couple pastries, and a coffee and grabbed a table outside, so I could watch locals and tourists walk down the popular street.
The Jambon de Parme sandwich was delicious, especially for the price – 5€. Of the pastries we tried, I loved the coffee eclair, which was topped with a piece of Wittamer chocolate (pictured, right). The eclair was a sweet treat – not overly sweet like the American versions – and was perfect with the Wittamer coffee.
Items I wished I tried – one of the many Wittamer quiches – priced under 15€, macarons (at their shoppe a few stores down), and their assortment of chocolates. That will give me more reason to fly back to Brussels.
