While doing some last minute veggie shopping at Greenwich Produce at Grand Central Market, I came across some sliced cactus pears. I remembered cactus pears as being one of the many items parrotlets eat in the wild. (I have 2 pet parrotlets). Anyway, I picked up a container of the cactus pears @ $7.99/lb. I never ate one before, so I was a bit curious. Doesn’t hurt to try something new. Looking closely at it, it had a texture and appearance of a watermelon. So delicate, it began to crumble when I picked it up. Not as juicy as a watermelon, but more like a pear. The cactus pear tasted like a pear, but also like a watermelon. Maybe that’s the best way to describe it – waterpear?
So intrigued by its taste I started reading more about the cactus pear. It is also called the ‘prickly pear.’ So far, I found one good article about this fruit on NaturalLivingCuisine.com.
