Morano Gelato, a small, New England-based company dedicated to promoting the art of gelato making, has released the market’s first gelato mix for consumer use, allowing home chefs to make gelato with few ingredients in just a few minutes right in their home kitchen.
Morano Gelato allows the cook to create fresh, authentic gelato with the simple addition of heavy cream and milk to the shelf-stable mix. The only special equipment required is an ice cream maker or ice cream extension for your mixer.
When Morano Gelato reached out to us to sample their new gelato mix, we gladly accepted. We tried the Fior di Latte gelato mix. Already equipped with a Cuisinart ice cream maker, making the gelato was easy. It was only a few additional steps than making homemade ice cream. Just watch the video below.
One thing I learned about gelato, now that I’ve made it at home, is it should be served at a slightly warmer temperature than ice cream, so its texture stays silkier and softer. When you want to enjoy your homemade gelato, take it out of the freezer, let it soften up for 10-20 minutes, scoop out what you need then place the rest back in the freezer. The gelato should be stored for only a couple days, as it tastes best when it is fresh. Authentic Italian gelato is made and served same-day.
The Taste
Forgive me if I offend anyone, I may not be describing it right. Morano Gelato’s “Fior di Latte” tastes like a vanilla (without the bean), but more like a fresh cream. From what I’ve learned, Fior di Latte is gelato in its purest form, so using the best ingredients is key.
Having young children in the house, I added high quality chocolate chips to our gelato, converting it to a stracciatella.
Why not make it from scratch?
Gelato can be quite complicated to make in your home kitchen. That’s why I never made it before using this mix.
(Morano Gelato founder Morgan Morano would know–she wrote the book on the topic!) Morgan set out to create a way for home chefs to make gelato the way it should be–fresh and eaten soon after its making–as simply as many people use baking mixes. By using a mix, the home chef can reduce ingredients and complexity.
The Morano Gelato Mix, which makes approximately 4 quarters of gelato, can be purchased online ($20 plus shipping), and at Morano Gelato’s stores in Chestnut Hill, MA and Hanover, NH, with plans to expand to retail and specialty stores nationally. Fior di Latte (sweet cream) Gelato Mix, the first flavor being released, is delicious on its own or can be transformed with additional ingredients.
Disclosure: I received a box of Fior di Latte gelato mix from Morano Gelato. The opinions expressed are my own and I received no further compensation.
