There are many great restaurants in the Murray Hill section of NYC. One that stands out, mainly because it’s the only Indian-Thai fusion restaurant in NYC, is Chal Chilli. Chal Chilli opened back in April 2013 and is already generating buzz in the nabe Curry Hill, and beyond. The restaurant started with a vision from Ayesha Kiani who consulted with Fatima Ali, a winner on Food Network’s show Chopped. Fatima advised on staying true to the South Asian heritage, with adding just the right amount of Thai fusion.
We started off our meal with a Thai classic, Papaya Salad, made with fresh papaya, carrots, bean sprouts, fresh basil and roasted peanut and tamarind sauce. It was light and refreshing. I enjoyed the taste of their sauce – a nice alternative to the usual ingredient – pungent fish sauce.
The Meaty Dumplings was another excellent appetizer. Five perfectly handmade chicken and shrimp dumplings are served with sweet soy sauce. Each bite is full of flavor, and the dough was perfect – not too thick, and the right consistency.
Be sure to order their freshly baked roti canai. They’re great for soaking up the sauce of their amazing dishes like the Spinach which is sauteed in ginger and other exotic spices or their Chicken Chilli Pepper, made with onion, Italian peppers, scallion, baby bok choy, and fresh chilli pepper sauce.
To wash it all down, we recommend trying their Thai Iced Tea, which is brewed to order. Not too sweet like what is served at most Thai restaurants, their version is herbal and refreshing.
Overall we were very impressed by the taste and quality of their food. The staff is very friendly. The prices and portions are great. Dishes range from $5 to $19. Chal Chilli serves Halal food and is BYOB. They also offer a great lunch menu with items starting at $6.95.
