On Westermarkt there is a great bakery and broodje (sandwich) shoppe that sells the best sandwiches in town: de Osdorper & Cup A la Cake. I’ve had many sandwiches during my recent trip to Amsterdam, and I’ll have to admit, I got food here three times in one week. You can’t have too much of a good thing.
I first stumbled upon this place when my friend told me to stop by Koh-i-noor for dinner. Just trying to get myself acquainted with the area, I was lured in by a fancy display of cupcakes at the front window. I thought to myself – Geez, the cupcake trend hit here too? So, I went in mainly to see what cupcakes they had to sell.
There were cupcakes – regular and mini sizes – and of many flavors – vanilla, chocolate, red velvet, and more. I’m not a fan of cupcakes, so I tried a mini vanilla and it was pretty good: a small serving with just the right amount of frosting – overall, the cupcake was delicious, and the frosting wasn’t too sugary, or sweet at that.
Towards the back of the cafe was the counter where they had several plates of sandwich samples (shown at the bottom of this review). Unfortunately I don’t know the Dutch-English translation, but I’ll take a guess at what they were:
- bacon sandwich
- pepperoni and cucumber
- ham and hard-boiled eggs
- proscuitto and cucumber
- caprese (mozzarella, tomato and basil)
- roast beef gorgonzola
- corned beef
I sampled a bite size of the Roast Beef Gorgonzola and I was already hooked, so I ordered a full size sandwich for 5€, a really good deal for the quality of food: tender thin slices of medium-cooked roast beef, crumbles of gorgonzola cheese, and round panini bread – not too thick and toasted to perfection. Sandwiches are toasted to order.
Come here for:
- Sandwiches – which you bring with you for a picnic at Vondelpark
- Baked goods – pastries, croissants, tarts, and muffins
- Sweets – pre-packed biscuits and Dutch cookies
- Snacks – personal size pizza and meat filled croissants
- Coffee
- Cupcakes
