A trip to the Stamford – High Ridge Farmers Market

Stamford ‐ High Ridge Farmers Market
High Ridge Shopping Center
1000 High Ridge Road
Wednesdays and Sundays 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
June 18 – October 29

Like any other farmers market, you will see fresh produce from local farms, including corn, broccoli, peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, and berries. But one thing that caught my eye was a big yellow bucket of squash blossoms. Squash blossoms, also known as zucchini blossoms, are beautiful yellow flowers that are best eaten when stuffed with a cheese mixture, like ricotta, and then fried to a golden brown. At least, that’s what I’ve heard from the vendor and other foodies. The vendor also recommended dipping them in a pancake batter and deep frying them.

One notable vendor is Wave Hill Breads, a bakery in Norwalk, CT (formerly located in Wilton, CT prior to June 2011). On their table are cubes of bread to sample – including Roasted Red Pepper and Olive Ciabatta, Pain de Campagne (Country Bread), and Whole and Hearty Multigrain. All were delicious, but my favorite was the Roasted Red Pepper and Olive Ciabatta, which I bought a loaf of for $6. The bread is soft and a slightly salty from the olives, but biting into an olive or roasted pepper is such a treat. Be warned, once you start eating a slice of bread, you cannot stop. No need for olive oil, you can eat this bread alone.

Other items available for sale at the Wave Hill Breads stand are croutons, baguettes, and boules.

If you cannot make it to this farmers market, they are also distributed at other markets across Fairfield County and Westchester, and at some Whole Foods Markets.
