Brussels: La Brouette

Interior of La Brouette

La Brouette is located in Grand Place, Brussels. The translation from French is “the wheelbarrow” and yes, you will find a wheelbarrow on display in the restaurant.

Two of my friends dined here during their recent trips to Brussels, and during a random conversation they both claimed to have had the best lasagna here. NOTE: they did not know each other at the time of dining here, and they dined here in different years.

Alas, it was my turn to see if their claims were true. The day I arrived in Brussels I decided to have my birthday lunch at La Brouette. I ordered the Lasagne à la bolognaise, 9,80€, and my husband ordered the Croque Hawaïen (ham, cheese, pineapple), 8,50€.

The lasagne was just as they described it – tender sheets of pasta layered with a delicious bechamel and tomato sauces and ground meat. Each bite was savory, or should I say heavenly. After one bite, I was convinced this was the best lasagne I’ve ever had – in the world.

The Croque Hawaïen was good – just a croque monsieur with slices of pineapple in it served with a small side salad. I think it would have been fine without the pineapple.

La Brouette also has a decent selection of beers. On your table, you will find a card with the beers of the month. Haven’t tried neither of them, we ordered both: Bink Blond and the Abelardus Tripel. I’ll admit I’m not good at describing the taste of beer, so I took a snapshot of the menu.

La Brouette is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. You can either dine indoors, or enjoy the Grand Place by taking any of their outdoors tables. Try the lasagne and let me know what you think.
