We moved to Westport a few months ago and we’re still eating our way through many of the restaurants in the 06880 zip code. Each week we’ll share a post or two on spots we discover. The first we had to write about is Saugatuck Craft Butchery, which recently merged with Fleisher’s Grass-fed and Organic Meats in Brooklyn.
Every week I’m at Saugatuck Fleisher’s Craft Butchery – either to buy meat or indulge in a burger in their cafe. The shop carries pasture-raised meat from small, local farms. What do I get? At least a pound of their burger blend along with a pack of brioche buns. The freezer case offers pints and quarts of sauces and chilis, as wells as a variety of sausage, which are discounted by 10% on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. I recommend the Merguez and Portuguese Linguiça. Both are excellent when cooked on the grill.
The cafe serves lunch Tuesdays to Friday, and brunch on the weekends. Soon, Craft Butchery will serve dinner Thursday through Saturday. On the menu are a variety of sandwiches, entrees, and salads.
We tend to gravitate towards the burgers when we choose to dine in. Why? The aroma and the sound of the meat sizzling on the grill. Not to mention, how tasty they look when they are served to other diners. The burgers can be ordered pink or not, and are served on seeded brioche. The ‘merican (shown above) is a delicious, juicy burger dressed with lettuce, cheese, pickles, onion, and a special sauce. The Lamburger is fantastic. Assembled with greens, roasted red peppers, red onion, cilantro, and garam masala aioli, each bite is jam-packed with flavor. Don’t forget to order a side of crispy Shoestring Fries. The next thing I’m eager to try is the Craft Burger made with dry-aged beef, IPA fondue, bacon jam, bitter greens, and onion rings.
