Munchery, New York’s newest food-delivery startup, launched in NYC last month. Munchery is part of a new breed of food delivery startups that place a premium on locally sourced, high-end meals cooked up daily by real chefs and delivered to your doorstep. After being on the wait list for months (thanks to a heads up from a foodie friend in San Francisco where the company originated), we finally placed our first dinner order which we enjoyed last night.

The average cost of an entree is pretty reasonable, ranging from $10 to $13 a dish for adults (about $5-7 for kids meals). And every time a meal is ordered, a donation of equal value is made to local charities like City Harvest. The delivery window is between 4:00 p.m. to 10 p.m.

So what did we try?

Pappardelle with Meat Sugo by Chef Steven Pereyda Alum of Aureole, The Bazaar

Fresh, handmade pappardelle pasta is served with a rich, slowly simmered sauce of tomatoes, beef, pork and a trinity of carrots, celery and onions. Topped with creamy, lemon-scented ricotta and Parmesan cheese and served alongside steamed broccolini.

Tasting Notes – The pasta was perfectly cooked. The sauce was fantastic. Would love to see this on the menu again.

Grilled Lemongrass Chicken with roasted fingerling potatoes, king oyster mushrooms by Chef Eric Meas, Alum of Daniel, Café Cambodge.

Marinated farm-fresh chicken breast from Murray’s Farm in rural Pennsylvania with lemongrass, galangal, turmeric, kaffir leaf, garlic and Asian spices, which is then grilled and served with herb-roasted fingerling potatoes and sauteed oyster mushrooms from Shibumi Farms near Princeton, NJ.

Tasting Notes – The chicken was tender, moist and flavorful. It didn’t need the accompanying sauce. One critique – a little overwhelmed by the amount of lemongrass. I loved the potatoes.

Munchery also serves kids meals. Of course we had to place an order for Lil Foodie Kai (our 2+ year old foodie in training) to see what she thought.

Kids Beef Goulash and Mac – macaroni, tomato-vegetable sauce, spinach by Chef Steven Pereyda, Alum of Aureole, The Bazaar

This Eastern European classic is a great way to sneak extra veggies into dinnertime. Their familiar macaroni is surrounded by slow-braised, tender beef and a tomato sauce with carrots, celery and spinach. Best of all, it’s full of flavor for kids (and adults) to enjoy!

Tasting Notes – Delicious dish. The chunks of beef were seasoned well and cooked perfectly. Kai, almost ate the whole serving, until she saw my parpadelle.

For dessert, we had chocolate chip cookies which I wish we had a dozen of.

Consensus: Loved it!

Portion sizes are good – enough for one. But order a couple things are share with your family or friends.
