The Mooring Seafood Kitchen & Bar, located downtown on Newport’s historic waterfront at Sayers Wharf, offers a scenic view and great seafood. On the menu are typical items you’d find at a seafood restaurant in New England, like clam chowder, lobster sandwiches, and raw bar classics.
What caught our eye off the appetizers list was the Bag of Doughnuts. Served out of a brown bag are a half dozen fritters made with lobster, crab and shrimp with a side of chipotle-maple aioli. Each piece has a decent amount of seafood. The New England Clam Chowder was delicious with chunks of clam in every spoonful.

For the main course, we tried the Baked Maine Lobster. Despite having too much breadcrumbs, this was a good dish packed with native scallops and shrimp.
Stuffed Maine Lobster |
The Portuguese Cod caught my eye. Served in a bowl is perfectly cooked cod, native Littleneck clams, Yukon potatoes, green olives, tomato, and chouriço (chorizo). The broth is made of the Portuguese wine Vinho Verde. It’s a light, satisfying dish. Each bite has a perfect ratio of saltiness from the olives and cod and a hint of spiciness from the chorizo.

Overall a great dining experience. We had a late dinner (at 9pm) and the restaurant was still packed by the time we left. Make sure you have reservations, especially on weekends.
