Pink Sumo Sushi & Sake Café in Westport, CT

Pink Sumo Sushi & Sake Café is Westport’s newest sushi restaurant, offering close to 30 hot and cold appetizers, or should we say Sumotizers, 30+ types of quality sake, and an array of cocktails, including the sexy Pink Cosmo.

In celebration of their opening, Pink Sumo held a special Grand Opening event with a tasting menu that’s got us itching to go back for more.

Our experience started with a Sake Flight of three premium sakes served cold: Tengumai “Dancing Goblins,” Kakujo “Castle of Cranes, and Kitaya Kansansui. While we’ll admit we’re not sake connoisseurs, we do know what good sake tastes like, and these definitely hit the spot:  It was a great flight that built up from one drink to the next.  The Tengumai will be an easy favorite for many and you clearly won’t be disappointed.

Fancy a flight of sake?

Each of the dishes we were served was gorgeous – from the rock shrimp in the fancy martini glass to the plates of sushi and sashimi.

The Rock Shrimp was a flavorful dish, served with a mango coconut sauce and cooked perfectly with the right balance of texture – juicy shrimp with a little crunch. At the first bite, we thought of Nobu’s rock shrimp dish, which we always order every time we dine there. We were later told the head chef, Eric Cheng, previously worked at Nobu in New York City.  We would choose this over Nobu’s any day.

One of Pink Sumo’s creations is the Bollywood Roll, a delicious roll made with crunchy spicy tuna and avocado with a drizzle of curry sauce. Executed well, the flavors of this roll dance in your mouth. When served, you can smell the curry.  The Futomaki is another great roll to try, especially if you prefer cooked sushi ingredients.

Alas the came the sashimi. You can really tell if a sushi house is good, based on the quality of the fish. And, yes, Pink Sumo’s fish was fresh. As what we always say, no need for soy sauce because the fish was fresh. Just taste the meat and enjoy. The flavors expanded as the sashimi melts in your mouth.  On a side note, we found out from owner Skye Kwok that the fish is delivered at least 3-4 times a week.

Sashimi – Tuna, Salmon, Yellowtail

We’ll have to admit, we may not have a reason to drive down to NYC for fresh sushi and sashimi anymore, and we crave sushi often. Sorry Nobu and Morimoto, we’re staying in Fairfield County.
