Calexico serves up Cal-Mex food in NYC

Calexico (Twitter: @CalexicoNYC) is run by 3 brothers from SoCal. This street vendor won the 2008 Vendy Awards – impressive! Calexico serves up Cal-Mex food at 3 locations in NYC:

Tacos start at $3; Quesadillas start at $6; Burritos start at $7. They’ve also got sides like chips and salsa for $3.

I stopped by the cart at the Flatiron District for a quick bite, and to see what my colleagues were buzzin’ about. The tacos are pretty good – even better with the roasted tomato salsa that they serve with their blue corn tortilla chips. I tried the Pollo Verde for $3. It’s slow cooked chicken in a tangy tomatillo sauce, pickled jalapeños, cotija cheese and topped with tomatoes, cilantro and lime. It could use a little more cilantro, but overall a decent taco.

The Frijoles Negros burrito is a “good, but not outstanding” meal, according to my vegetarian friend, Alex. This burrito comes with a choice of black or pinto beans, guacamole, cotija, roasted tomato salsa, chipotle “crack” sauce for $7. Lacking in some heat, my friend doused his up with the salsa and Cholula hot sauce.
