As part of the itinerary for BlogHer Food 2011, we had a “field trip” to the Sweet Auburn Curb Market in Downtown Atlanta. The Sweet Auburn Curb Market is an indoor farmers market with small restaurants.
Hungry for some southern food, I perused the market searching for the restaurant that would satisfy my cravings. Walking past butcher stands, produce stands, and a bakery, I came across Metro Catering & Deli. I thought to myself they’ve got a little too much going on – soul food, gyros, falafel, and Mexican food are on their menu. I continued to walk on by, but had to take a double-look when I saw ribs, fried chicken, and collard greens on display. Also, Donna Pierce of Black America Cooks, who also was a speaker at one of the BlogHer Food panels, was standing on line ordering a blue plate special. I figured she would know exactly where to go for good southern cooking. So we can engaged in a little chit chat and her sources said that this place serves excellent food, and you’ve gotta try it. With no hesitation, I went on queue and looked at the food on display: fried chicken, meatloaf, spare ribs, collard greens, green beans, macaroni and cheese, and more fixins’.
I ordered the Spare Ribs Blue Plate for $7. The two sides I selected were the green beans and collard greens – my favorites. They also topped it off with a corncake. The spare ribs were delicious and tender; so tender, the meat could be peeled off with a plastic fork. The collard greens were great, but lacked the kick I was expecting. The green beans were very good. The corncake was delicious. I was expecting it to be dry, but it was moist, and a little buttery. The staff at Metro Catering was surprised to see little me finish off my plate. I told them the food was delicious and couldn’t let anything go to waste.
